Subbulakshmi. Born in Madurai in 1916, M.S. Subbulakshmi became the voice of Carnatic music to the world — the first Indian musician to sing at the United Nations General Assembly, in 1966, and the first musician of any kind to receive the Bharat Ratna. She sang barefoot, in a Kanjeevaram, and gave over two hundred concerts to charity. This silk half saree carries her name as an act of paying homage to a voice that outlived its own century.
